materials about the history of Africa.
These are excellent sources on ancient
history, the Greek and Roman period
slavery and abolition, Europena imperialism,
and modern Africa. Standards 6.1.2,

African Civilizations

Battuta: The Greatest Traveler in the
Middle Ages
- Description: This online issue of
Bill of Rights in Action by the Constitutional
Rights Foundation features the travels
of Ibn Battuta, a medieval African.
He traveled further and visited more
countries than any other person in medieval
times. His final journey took him to
Mali, a Muslim empire in West Africa.
This report of his travels reveals a
vivid portrait of the Muslim world at
its height. Standard 7.2.5, 7.4.3 and

- Kennedy
Center African Odyssey Interactive
-Description: This site, developed through
the Kennedy Center, has material on
African history and culture from early
times through modern. It is a little
difficult to navigate. Standards 7.4.5
Comments: Reading is dense for many
students so it would be best to break
it into small sections.
- Mali
- Description: This site includes a
short history of Mali, information on
its African neighbors, interactive tests,
links, an art gallery, maps and links
to Songhay. Standard 7.4.1
- Mr.
Dowling's Electronic Passport - Ancient
Africa
- Description: Here is a set of brief
pages about ancient Africa on the following
topics: oral tradition, the Nok, Carthage,
trade, Ghana, Sundiata, Mansa Musa,
Timbuktu, and Zimbabwe. The site is
part of the Electronic Passport project.

an overview of the city of Timbuktu
which flourished in northern African
during the 14th and 15th centuries.
Within the article key topics are hotlinked

- Description: This is an electronic
exhibition illustrating and explaining
the aesthetics and meaning of African
art . Standard 7.4.3
- Wonders
of the African World
- Description: PBS series to discover
a wealth of African history and culture
in Wonders of the African World
- Wrapped
in Pride
- Description: Wrapped in Pride explores
the history of traditional Ghanaian
weaving and its impact on cultures beyond
Africa's shores. A collaboration between
the National Museum of African Art and
the Anacostia Museum and Center for
African American History and Culture,
this online exhibition provides an introduction
